The Results of a Mold Bread Experiment

If you are interested in learning about what mold is and how it grows, then one of the best ways to figure this out is to do a mold bread experiment. For this mold bread experiment, you are going to need: 4 slices of bread, water, saran wrap, 1 to 2 weeks of experiment time, and a magnifying glass.

Getting Started on the Mold Bread Experiment

The first thing you need to do for the mold bread experiment is to take one of the pieces of bread and cut it in half, and seal one half in saran wrap and leave the other exposed to air. Then take another piece of bread and cut it in half as well, leaving one half in the dark and the other in a strong light, such as in sunlight for instance.

Then you want to take a third piece of bread and slice it in half, keeping one half very dry and putting about 1 tbsp. of water on the other half, continuing to spray a bit of water on this half over the next few days as well. Then you want to take the fourth and final piece of bread and cut it in half. Put one half someplace warm, in the dark, for instance on the top of the fridge in a paper bag, and put the other half someplace cold and dark, for instance in the refrigerator.

The next step in the mold bread experiment is to watch what happens with each of the samples over the next few weeks, remembering that mold is only going to develop on some of the samples. In the first sample the sealed bread should develop mold more slowly than the unsealed bread, in the second the bread that was kept in darkness should develop mold more quickly than the bread that was left out in the light.

In the third sample, the moist bread will develop mold more quickly than the dry bread, and in the fourth sample the bread that was kept in the warm dark place should grow mold more quickly than the bread that was kept in the cold dark place.

By doing these sorts of experiments, you are really able to learn more about mold and about its growth and development habits, and so not only are you more informed and knowledgeable from this but as well you will be more aware of how mold can grow in your home and thus what you should do in order to keep it mold free as best as you can.
